When a friend who was doing his Ph.D at Harvard suggested that Woodard do likewise, the response was: Im so poor that I will be fortunate to get a doctorate from any university, but I will be so good that I will not need the name Harvard. This was not arrogance, but a reflection of his self confidence. He was named a Distinguished Educator and Role Model For American Youth in 1997. That same year he retired from teaching graduate students leadership and team building at Howard University. In 1977 he presented a lecture before the Afro-American Department of Harvard. The subject was his pioneer study of high academic achievement of D.C. junior high students from low income families. On October 3, 2003 he received a call indicating the Educational Leadership Department at Howard wanted him to return to campus to be honored as a co-founder of the Ph.D Program in Educational Administration. His first book was Anatomy of a Poor Black Orphans Dream Achievement (2004) York Haven Press.
